About

Lister Community School Music Department

The Music Department at Lister Community School is one of the best resourced departments in the country. With funding from the Music in Secondary Schools Trust, a partnership with Newham Music, and collaborations with organisations and artists including the National Youth Orchestra, t

he Southbank Centre, Opera North, Drumworks, the Music Department at the University of York and many more, we are working towards creating an environment where our students and members of our community can discover, nurture and develop their musical talents and passions.

All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have and learn an instrument as part of their core Music curriculum – that means over 850 instruments being played in school each week. Students with a particular interest in Music have the opportunity to take additional free instrumental lessons and participate in a wide range of ensembles and projects. Our Orchestra, Jazz Band, Concert Band, rock and pop bands, solo performers and young composers are flourishing; recent highlights include performances at the Barbican and Southbank Centre, and welcoming Her Majesty the Queen to Lister.
